HTML Introduction

What HTML is and how a web page is structured.

✍️ 3 exercises + code challenge in this lesson

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the standard language used to describe the structure of a web page. Every website you visit is built on HTML.

HTML is made of elements. Elements tell the browser what each piece of content is: a heading, a paragraph, a link, an image and so on.

A simple HTML document

  • <!DOCTYPE html> tells the browser this is an HTML5 document.
  • <html> is the root element that wraps the whole page.
  • <head> contains information about the page, like its title.
  • <title> sets the text shown in the browser tab.
  • <body> contains everything visible on the page.
The browser never shows the tags themselves. It uses them to decide how to display the content.
